How to Stay Cool, Calm and Collected at a Summer Wedding (Even in a Heatwave)

There's nothing quite like a summer wedding in the South West of the UK. Golden hour ceremonies, relaxed garden receptions, and the sweet hum of music floating through the warm evening air – it can be pure magic. But as any seasoned wedding professional will tell you, summer in Britain can be unpredictable. And every now and then, that dreamy sunshine can tip into a full-on heatwave.

As a professional violinist performing across Somerset, Devon, Dorset and beyond, I’ve seen what heat can do to a well-laid wedding plan – from wilted flowers to guests searching desperately for shade. But with a bit of forward thinking (and some backup water bottles!), you can enjoy every moment without overheating.

Here’s how to keep your cool – physically and emotionally – when the temperature soars on your wedding day.

Shift Your Focus from Perfection to Preparation

Weddings and weather have one thing in common: neither likes to follow the rules. So if your heart is set on a sun-drenched outdoor celebration, brilliant – but have a plan B ready just in case.

Talk to your venue and suppliers about options. Is there indoor or shaded space available? Can ceremony times shift slightly if needed? A quick conversation now can save a lot of sweat later (literally).

Dress for the Day (and the Degrees)

Whether you're the one walking down the aisle or dancing beside it, what you wear matters. Natural, breathable fabrics like silk, linen and cotton will serve you far better than heavy synthetic blends – especially under layers, veils or suits.

Think about practicality as well as style. Cooling sprays, blotting paper, anti-chafing balm and a fresh change of clothes for later in the day can work wonders.

And if you’re planning to perform, photograph or entertain (like I often do), comfortable attire is key. I always bring options, and yes – even my violin case carries a mini fan these days!

Time It Right

The midday sun (typically between 12–3pm) is no joke. If your ceremony is outside, aim for earlier or later – or at the very least, have some shade in place.

Drink stations, parasols and chilled hand towels can elevate comfort instantly. Consider a cooler alternative to champagne for arrivals, like citrus coolers, iced tea or elderflower fizz.

And if you're incorporating live music during your ceremony or drinks reception, remember that both performers and instruments (especially violins!) need protection from direct sun. Shade us, and we’ll serenade you beautifully.

Create Shade, Breeze and Breathing Space

Don’t underestimate the power of airflow. Portable fans, open marquees, stretch tents, or even handheld paper fans can make all the difference for your guests.

If you’re using flowers, cakes or decor sensitive to heat, work with your florist or planner to keep everything fresh and well-timed. Nothing melts faster than buttercream or roses in direct sun.

Hydration is Elegance (Truly)

It may not be glamorous, but water is your best friend on a hot day. Keep it accessible throughout the venue, offer fun non-alcoholic options, and don’t rely solely on prosecco to quench thirst.

During performances, I always make sure there's a water break between sets. It keeps the music flowing – and everyone feeling their best.

Your Emergency Heatwave Kit

A few essentials to have on hand:

  • Sunscreen

  • Cooling mist spray

  • Mini deodorant

  • Blotting sheets

  • Plasters (for those barefoot dance moments!)

  • Snacks and extra water

Keep this kit nearby – maybe in your bridal suite or with a trusted friend. Little comforts make a big difference.

Look After You (Yes, You)

It’s easy to get caught up worrying about everyone else’s comfort. But if you're not drinking water, eating, or giving yourself a breather, it’ll show by mid-afternoon.

Step into the shade, touch up, sip water, breathe – you’re allowed. This day is yours.

If I notice a couple looking overwhelmed before I begin performing, I’ll often gently suggest a quiet moment before we start. Music has a way of softening the edges and bringing people back to centre.

Trust Your Wedding Team to Adapt

If the heat changes your plan slightly – that’s okay. Good suppliers (musicians, planners, caterers, photographers) know how to pivot. We’re here to make things work, not just follow a script.

A quick regroup the night before or morning of the wedding can help align everyone with the new heat-conscious plan.

Remember What the Day is Really About

Summer weddings can be golden and glorious – and even on the hottest days, they still hold that incredible sense of love and celebration.

With a little flexibility, the right support, and an ice-cold drink in hand, you’ll glide through the day in comfort and joy.

So go ahead – dance barefoot on the lawn, sip something cool, listen to the violin notes drifting through the warm air… and celebrate your love under the summer sky, exactly as you are.

Best wishes, Laura Seymour
