There is something undeniably magical about walking down the aisle to live music that feels like it was written just for you. As a professional violinist, I've had the honour of soundtracking hundreds of unforgettable ceremonies, and one of the most common questions I hear is: "How do we choose the right music for our wedding ceremony?"

Whether you're dreaming of a grand entrance, an emotional moment at the signing of the register, or a joyful exit as newlyweds, the right music can set the perfect tone for your day. Here's how to make your wedding ceremony music as meaningful and memorable as possible.

1. Understand the Key Moments

There are usually four main parts of the ceremony that benefit from live music:

  • Prelude – Soft, welcoming background music as guests arrive and are seated.

  • Processional – The entrance of the bridal party and the couple.

  • Signing of the Register – A calm, reflective moment where music fills the silence.

  • Recessional – The celebratory walk back down the aisle as a newly married couple!

Each of these moments offers a chance to express your personalities and emotions through carefully chosen songs.

2. Reflect Your Style as a Couple

Are you both classical music lovers? Obsessed with film scores? Prefer a modern twist on traditional pieces? Your ceremony music should reflect your relationship and taste.

Some ideas:

  • Classical Elegance – Canon in D, Ave Maria, The Four Seasons

  • Modern Romance – "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri, "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran

  • Cinematic Magic – "Concerning Hobbits" from The Lord of the Rings, "Glasgow Love Theme" from Love Actually

  • Unique Choices – A bespoke arrangement of your favourite song (yes, I can create this for you!)

3. Think About the Atmosphere

The music you choose should complement the vibe of your venue and ceremony. A stately church might suit a soaring classical piece, while a garden wedding might call for something more light and whimsical. My acoustic violin is perfect for intimate, romantic ceremonies, while the electric violin offers a rich, cinematic sound that can fill larger or more modern spaces.

4. Don't Forget Practicalities

While it’s wonderful to dream big with your music choices, it's important to consider:

  • The length of your aisle (choose a piece that can be easily looped or shortened)

  • Venue restrictions (some churches only allow sacred music)

  • Weather (for outdoor ceremonies, amplification might be needed)
